OpenAI is making a powerful comeback with its Robotics division after 2020, with bold plans for adaptable AI-driven robots. Led by Kalinowski, OpenAI Robotics is looking for a new team, an X post reveals.
OpenAI Robotics, the latest venture by the AI powerhouse, represents a quantum leap into the physical world of technology. OpenAI dissolved its robotics group in 2020 and is now making a serious comeback with a new division and a visionary leader at its helm. This move underlines OpenAI's ambition to seal its reputation as not only a leading AI development company but also a trailblazer in innovative hardware solutions.
Caitlin Kalinowski, who joined OpenAI in late 2024, brings expertise from her time leading Meta's hardware team responsible for developing the Orion AR glasses prototype.
Now, Kalinowski is channeling her expertise into robotics, aiming to unlock the benefits of AI in the physical world. In her announcement on social media, she revealed her enthusiasm for developing hardware solutions that bridge the gap between advanced AI models and real-world applications.
Her LinkedIn post echoed this sentiment:
“In my new role, I will initially focus on OpenAI's robotics work and partnerships to help bring AI into the physical world and unlock its benefits for humanity.”
Under Kalinowski's leadership, OpenAI has already begun hiring for key positions in its new OpenAI robotics division. Job listings shared by her on X highlight roles for:
OpenAI’s strategy goes beyond simply building robots. Job descriptions detail the ambition to design “general-purpose” robots with human-like intelligence capable of operating in dynamic real-world environments. The company aims to create its own sensor systems and computational tools to support these efforts.
Notably, the team is working across the full stack of robotics development—from conceptual design to full-scale production.
One notable listing highlights OpenAI Robotics’ aim to mass-produce systems, targeting production volumes exceeding one million units. This bold goal underscores the company’s long-term commitment to reshaping the robotics industry.
OpenAI is also collaborating with notable robotics startups such as Figure and X1, both of which aim to produce humanoid robots powered by AI. OpenAI provides the AI models fueling these robots while carving out its niche by developing complementary hardware systems.
These partnerships underscore OpenAI's strategic focus - enabling third-party robotics developers rather than directly competing with them. It’s a move designed to establish OpenAI as a cornerstone in the broader robotics ecosystem.
The robotics industry, with $6.4 billion in venture capital in 2024, is lucrative but loaded with challenges like scalability and past delays in humanoid projects. OpenAI’s fusion of advanced AI and hardware could give it a competitive edge.
Robotics isn’t the only hardware venture on OpenAI’s horizon. The company has partnered with former Apple design chief Jony Ive to create an AI-integrated consumer device. Simultaneously, OpenAI is reportedly developing custom chips to optimize its AI models, further diversifying its hardware portfolio.
With its rebooted robotics division and the incorporation of Caitlin Kalinowski's leadership, OpenAI is set to make itself a serious player at the intersection of AI and physical technology. Combining innovative hardware with state-of-the-art AI, it's shortening the path toward general-purpose robots that can reshape industries and everyday life.
