In a bold move to expand AI dominance, OpenAI partners with Kakao, integrating ChatGPT tech into Korea’s top messaging app.
OpenAI, the creator of the chatbot model ChatGPT, recently signed a strategic partnership with South Korean chat app marketplace leader Kakao to develop artificial intelligence (AI) offerings for the Korean marketplace. In terms of the agreement, disclosed in a press conference in Seoul on Tuesday, both companies signed a first-ever collaboration between them.
Kakao is a South Korean tech giant best known for KakaoTalk, the country’s dominant messaging app with 97% domestic market share. The company has also expanded into eCommerce, payments, and gaming, positioning AI as a key focus for future growth.
“Kakao’s role in modern times is to introduce ‘customized AI that best understands its users’ through capabilities gained over a long period through most everyone’s daily lives,” added Kakao CEO Chung Shin-a. She continued that OpenAI will "pioneer the popularization of AI services through new forms of customer experiences."
Kakao has a deep understanding of how technology enriches our daily lives, and we continue to deliver innovative experiences to our users.
-OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
He highlighted that OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI models would be integrated into Kakao’s products, including its flagship messaging app, KakaoTalk, and its upcoming AI agent service, Kanana.
OpenAI and Kakao collaboration will integrate OpenAI's newest AI models into its portfolio to enable it to move towards becoming an "AI-native company." Besides, the company will introduce ChatGPT Enterprise to enhance its commercial operations.
“We are particularly interested in AI and messaging,” Sam Altman said at the press conference, underscoring how this partnership could redefine digital communication in Korea.
Beyond their technical cooperation, Kakao and OpenAI are also exploring joint product development to push AI adoption in Korea. “This partnership will be a turning point in Kakao’s efforts to advance its orchestration strategy and bring the future closer to its needs,” Chung Shin-a said.
Altman also touched on Korea’s growing role in the global AI ecosystem, particularly in relation to the Stargate data center project, a joint venture between OpenAI, Oracle, and other tech giants. “There is so much happening in Korea that will be critical for that,” Altman noted. He added that OpenAI is “actively considering” investing in South Korea’s upcoming AI computing center, a $1.4 billion initiative led by the Korean government.
With this collaboration, Kakao will bridge its gap with its Korean AI rival, Naver, which took over AI in Korea. On announcing, its stocks increased 9% Monday and increased an additional 0.2% Tuesday.
As AI development companies continue to reshape global industries, OpenAI’s partnerships in Asia - first with Japan’s SoftBank and now with Kakao signal a broader push for AI expansion in the region. Altman’s whirlwind tour of Asia isn’t stopping in South Korea. His next destination is India, where he is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss AI advancements.
