Microsoft Paint 3D Will Get Discontinued By November 2024

Date: August 13, 2024

Microsoft is killing Paint 3D, introduced as a replacement for the original paint application, and will remove it from its store by November.

Microsoft Paint caused a sensation when the tech giant tried to remove it as a deprecated asset. Fans from across the world showered love for the application, which prevented it from being permanently removed from the store. It was replaced by Paint 3D as a default application in the newer Windows 10 models. However, Paint 3D could not match the users’ expectations and is now being deprecated, with a scheduled removal from the Microsoft store on 4th November 2024.

"Paint 3D is deprecated and will be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. Existing installations of Paint 3D will continue to work, but the app will no longer be available for download from the Microsoft Store," stated the official announcement made by Microsoft. "If you remove the app, you can reinstall it from the Microsoft Store until November 4, 2024. After that date, Paint 3D will no longer be available for download. Paint 3D was preinstalled on some Windows 10 devices but wasn't preinstalled on Windows 11 devices."

Introduced 8 years ago as a modernized version of the 2D paint software, Paint 3D became a pre-installed application on Windows 10 devices. Not to our surprise, it was removed as a default application in Windows 11 devices, which became the first indicator of the app’s falling demand.

Regular paint users may not worry about this decision as the tech giant is bringing back the original paint software with powerful new features that can make it a single-stop solution for basic image editing and creation needs. Microsoft has added a Photoshop-like background remover tool and AI-powered image generation feature known as the Paint Cocreator in the 2D software.

Last year, Microsoft killed the legacy Wordpad application as it became almost redundant amidst cutthroat competition. It also began killing Cortana, a voice-based assistant that would become redundant alongside Microsoft’s new AI introductions like the Copilot.

Users who have installed Paint 3D on their devices can continue using the tool, but no more updates will be facilitated. A spokesperson from Microsoft noted that the software may eventually run into instability issues due to a lack of modern firmware support. Those who want can install the 3D software till November 4th, after which it will be removed permanently. As an alternative, users can also switch to some of the best free drawing software for their image editing and 3D creation purposes.
