Meta, the parent company of leading social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has introduced visual labels to AI-generated content.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, has announced a new labeling system for all AI-generated content. Meta AI, the latest introduction by the company, already labels the AI-generated posts as ‘Imagined with AI’, and now wants to extend this labeling to content created by Google and OpenAI platforms. By including the other big players in the AI field, Meta’s efforts can help users get enhanced clarity in terms of segregating content categories.
“As the difference between human and synthetic content gets blurred, people want to know where the boundary lies… So it’s important that we help people know when photorealistic content they’re seeing has been created using AI. We do that by applying “Imagined with AI" labels to photorealistic images created using our Meta AI feature." said Meta’s president, Nick Clegg while explaining the feature “That’s why we’ve been working with industry partners to align on common technical standards that signal when a piece of content has been created using AI. Being able to detect these signals will make it possible for us to label AI-generated images that users post to Facebook, Instagram and Threads."
Meta wants to create a common standard across multiple industries when it comes to creation and propagation of AI-generated content. From general posts to advertisement, AI is entering every field. The photorealistic capabilities of AI can cause acute deception in users, which can propagate misinformation. Credibility of human-generate content will stump if the difference in AI and real images, videos, and audio is not identified.
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg is in conversations with other tech giants to develop a common standard of media labeling. It has also partnered with various AI forums to identify the invisible markers of AI generated images from other companies.
The company also clarified that this step can take place only if other players like Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock start including Meta data to the images generated by their AI tools. Meta is also clear on the incapability to identify AI generated audio and videos as of now. To rectify this issue in short term, the company will allowing people to disclose the AI generated videos and audio on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads.
