Instagram Is Silently Developing A New Music-Sharing Feature

Date: August 28, 2024

Meta and Spotify are reportedly exploring ways to form deeper music integration on the Instagram app.

Instagram is one of the top social media platforms owned by Meta. Meta and Spotify are now reportedly building an inter-app capability that allows Instagram’s users to share what they’re listening to on Spotify. The catch here is that this music-sharing feature is not generic but lets them continuously share their listening experience through Instagram’s notes.

The new feature is being tested and developed silently, as found by the reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. Alessandro frequently shares rare finds like these on his social handles, acting as a key whistleblower of new and upcoming features of famous applications. However, tech giants like Meta and Spotify often test new features without the intent of releasing them to the public. So, this development may not be one for Instagram’s users anytime soon.

Paluzzi shared his findings through screenshots on Meta’s Threads platform. He showcased Spotify’s new feature, Continuously Share, which allows users to share their live music queue in Instagram’s notes. Users can also opt out of continuous sharing anytime with a single click, as mentioned by a note on the screenshot.

If launched, the new feature will build on a music-sharing feature launched back in 2022. After Instagram launched the Notes section, it also allowed users to share 30-second song clips from its library. The new feature received positive feedback and quickly gained popularity as a new, private canvas to share thoughts in short-form text. However, Instagram's music and songs library was limited to the licenses it acquired from various music publication houses worldwide.

With a potential collaboration with Spotify in the works, Instagram can effectively expand its content library and allow users to share more than 30 seconds of music. The desktop app of Spotify has an existing feature that allows users to connect with Facebook to see what their friends and connections are streaming on the platform.

Spotify has been exploring social engagement options for over two years now, with many failed attempts. This partnership can help the tech giant succeed in becoming a social sharing platform and engage with a wider audience through one of the best modes of communication: music.
