Google rolls out Gemini 2.0 Flash, its fastest AI yet - but briefly leaks a mysterious "Pro Experimental" model before deleting all mentions. Is Google scrambling to stay ahead in the AI race?
Google has officially launched Gemini 2.0 Flash, a faster, more efficient AI model designed to enhance real-time AI interactions, including AI chatbots, writing, brainstorming, and multimodal reasoning. Now set as the default model for Gemini Advanced subscribers, it boasts twice the speed of Gemini 1.5 Pro and introduces new capabilities for developers, businesses, and AI enthusiasts.
Unlike previous versions, Gemini 2.0 Flash supports real-time audio and vision streaming, making it a powerful tool for AI-driven voice and video applications. Google has also upgraded its image generation technology using the latest Imagen 3 AI, promising richer details and textures for users seeking high-quality AI-generated visuals.
For Gemini Advanced subscribers, the update unlocks premium features such as:
Gemini 2.0 Flash is also set to revolutionize AI chatbots, improving response times, conversational depth, and contextual awareness. Google describes it as a model built for the “agentic era,” where AI chatbots and automated assistants take on more complex workflows and real-time problem-solving tasks.
"With faster responses and improved performance, we’re making it easier for you to unlock new ways to create, interact, and collaborate with Gemini," Google wrote in its announcement.
While the Gemini 2.0 Flash launch was officially announced, another AI model briefly surfaced and vanished. A mysterious Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental model appeared in Google’s changelog, described as Google’s “leading model” with “better factuality” and stronger performance in coding and mathematical tasks. It was reportedly made available to Gemini Advanced subscribers before being quietly erased from all documentation.
Within hours, Google removed all references to Pro Experimental, raising speculation about whether the model was released prematurely or deliberately withdrawn. Google later stated that an “out-of-date release note” had been mistakenly published, but industry experts believe the model is still on the horizon.
“We believe in rapid iteration and bringing the best of Gemini to the world, and we want to give Gemini Advanced subscribers priority access to our latest AI innovations,” Google originally wrote in the now-deleted changelog.
The quiet rollout of Gemini 2.0 Flash suggests that Google is shifting toward a faster, more iterative AI development cycle, prioritizing performance upgrades and real-world usability.
Google appears to be moving quickly to solidify its position in the AI chatbot market. Whether Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental resurfaces or not, the next phase of AI competition has officially begun.
