Geoffrey Hinton, also known as the Godfather of AI, recently won the Nobel Prize in Physics and shared concerns about the negative impact of AI.
With growing AI advancements, the fear of it going out of control and against humanity keeps growing. Security systems, regulations, and makers’ intentions are not yet there to control, analyze, and limit innovations. Geoffrey Hinton, a British-Canadian scientist, recently received a Nobel Prize for his breakthrough work, which paved the way for the development of artificial intelligence.
Geoffrey shared the prize with American professor John J. Hopfield for their work on artificial neural networks. However, he did not focus on how the award impacted him but chose to utilize the global stage and spotlight to warn the world against the potential harms of AI advancements.
"I was in a cheap hotel in California that does not have an internet connection and does not have a very good phone connection. I was going to get an MRI scan today, but I think I'll have to cancel that."
Professor Hinton expressed that AI will be tremendously useful in healthcare, scientific research, climate change mitigation, and many more pro-humanity causes. However, its capability has the potential to turn into an inevitable disaster to the extent of ending humanity.
His message was crystal clear. "AI will have a huge influence similar to the industrial revolution. Instead of exceeding physical strength, it will enhance people's intellectual abilities. We have no experience with things that are smarter than us. It could give us much better healthcare and be more efficient. It will make a huge productivity improvement, but we also need to worry about bad consequences, particularly the threat of these things getting out of control," said Geoffrey Hinton during his winning speech.
This warning comes as the world is growing integrations of AI into the daily lives of individuals and organizations. The Nobel Laureate pressed on the importance of ethical considerations and responsible practices to minimize the risks of AI disasters and propel innovation sustainably.
