Apple is bringing a drastic change for its European users by removing the mandate of default Apple apps for calling, messaging, password management, and more.
Apple has kept stringent global rules for its users regarding which apps they can use. All Apple devices, including iPhones and iPads, have default calling, messaging, navigation, and more applications. These default applications can only be disabled by a user’s choice but cannot be removed from their devices. This situation is changing in Europe as Apple will soon remove the default apps’ mandate for iPad and iPhone users in the region.
According to an update released by Apple on Tuesday, the mandate for default applications is being lifted in Europe. This change will allow users to choose their default messaging, calling, keyboard, password management, and other purposes and delete the pre-installed applications they don’t want to use.
The changes will most likely come into effect later this year. A new default apps section will soon be added to the settings menu, where users can choose their default applications at their convenience. In early spring next year, Apple may also remove the default application mandate from navigation, translation apps, and calling spam filter apps.
The App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari apps, which were not allowed to be deleted, will also get the delete option. The only apps that will remain mandatory are Settings and Phone. Apple is also making smaller tweaks to its upcoming browser choice screen in the EU. Users who open the Safari browser for the first time will be shown the option to install alternate browsers like Firefox, Chrome, or DuckDuckGo.
By default, Apple’s applications will continue coming pre-installed, except that they can be removed easily in the new default apps settings bar. The fact that Apple is suddenly allowing external application developers to become default service providers on its devices indicates a strong intent to expand inter-business collaboration. Third-party App Stores will also come into play soon, where users can make transactions outside the default App Store list.
