Apple has upgraded the base models of the iPhone 16 series to 8GB RAM as a mandatory minimum requirement for running AI features smoothly.
The all-new iPhone series is set to launch on September 20, 2024. iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be available in Macao, Vietnam, and 19 other countries and regions beginning Friday, September 27. The pre-ordering links went live on September 13 worldwide. Just before the final launch day, Apple confirmed a critical hardware upgrade in the new iPhone series.
In an interview with a Chinese YouTube creator, Geekerwan, Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, revealed that 8GB RAM will be the base for the entire 16 lineup. The tech giant has historically offered 8GB RAM only in the PRO and PRO MAX series of new iPhone launches. Apple brought this drastic jump from 6GB RAM to 8GB RAM to enable Artificial Intelligence features without hiccups.
Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, said in the official announcement, “iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus mark the beginning of a new era for iPhone with Apple Intelligence delivering powerful, personal, and private experiences to our users. With new ways to discover the world around you and capture memories using Camera Control; a 48MP Fusion camera that gives you two optical-quality cameras in one; a big boost in battery life; and powerful, efficient performance thanks to the A18 chip, this is the perfect time for customers to upgrade or make the switch to iPhone.”
The iPhone 16 series is built for Artificial Intelligence, keeping in mind the latest user demands of conversation-based AI interactions and tasks. With an 8GB RAM, iPhone 16 and 16 Plus users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. Apple Intelligence can also summarize the phone call conversations, and participants are automatically notified when the AI is listening.
However, one key highlight of the new AI features is the visual AI. Apple’s new Visual Intelligence feature opens doors for real-time and real-world-based AI interactions to gather information about anything you see, copy details of a poster, or identify any object or living being. This experience can be the entry point for Apple to bring AI features to the Apple Glasses. Every experience will come alive from September 20th onwards, when the stable iPhone 16 series phones begin reaching people’s hands.
